The Range

Local residents are in despair after the multi-million pound home retailer The Range submitted a planning application for a 775,000 square foot distribution centre along west cepen way in Chippenham.

The centre will be one of the largest in the region - almost matching the west’s largest single building, Morrisons distribution centre along the the M5 in Somerset.

Campaigners against the centre have started a website The Rally Against The Range to get local people backing a petition to stop any future plans. The campaigners on the website highlighted the consequences of the project: “It will have a serious detrimental effect on business in the town centre.  Both small and large stores selling furniture, household goods, clothes, linen and camping goods would lose business, and as a result may be forced to close.”

The website also estimates: “At least 150 HGV articulated vehicle trucks around and through Chippenham, every day as well as traffic generated by employee vehicles.”

A local resident near to the sight said "It is going to impact on the traffic in our estate and they’ll have to have lights on 24 hours for security.”

Protestors have already held a march around the proposed site and put up signs to get more people involved but recently they have been vandalised. A £1,000 reward has been offered for information leading to the successful prosecution of the culprit.

Campaigner Elizabeth Kennedy told the Wiltshire Times: “Instead of having a beautiful rural view of Cepen Park residents are going to get a monster of a building. And Allington is a conservation area.”

The new store and the distribution centre will bring £31 million to the Wiltshire economy each year, 1,000 new jobs and £20 million lift to Wiltshire’s economy during construction.

The Range recently released a document including updated plans and answers to the residents questions. The Range included why they chose Chippenham:Chippenham is considered a highly suitable location due to its good access to the M4 and the large workforce. The town has been identified as a strategically important centre within Wiltshire and compared to larger centres, the economic benefits of the proposals will be felt much more strongly in the local area”

However, some residents are pleased with the plans for a new store in Chippenham, including Mr Snell who spoke to the Gazzette and Herald: “I’ve lived here all my 66 years. I can remember when we used to drive cattle down the High Street.”

“We need to provide work and to ensure the future for our children and grandchildren. Too many companies have been pushed away from this area; we’ve lost Aldi, Lidl and Asda to Melksham, losing potential employment to the town.”

The decision will be made by Wiltshire Council in early March and if the planning application is approved The Range hope to start construction in May and opening in spring 2016.

Questions/information-

Email-

Hi,

I am a news reporter from the Bath Chronicle was just wondering if it would be ok if you could answer a few questions about your plans for opening a new store and a distribution centre in Chippenham.

Local residents have made claims about how many lorries will be coming in and out of the centre each day. They have told us that there will be an estimate of around 150 lorries each day and one about every 10 minutes?

Some residents are worried that the the centre will be a massive grey building in the middle of the country side. Are you doing anything to make the building environmentally friendly and will you be doing anything to cover the building?

Do you feel that it is acceptable to build a distribution in a tower why couldn’t you have built it closer to the the motorway?

Local residents have spoke to us saying that the centre will create queues of traffic in the Chippenham area and centre. Are you doing anything to help this flow of traffic?

Thank you very much for your time.

Quote-

Chippenham quote, Chris Dawson, owner and founder of The Range.
“We’re looking for a new long-term home in Chippenham.  We’re investing in Chippenham as it is perfectly positioned to service our store network, support our new stores and the town has the labour force we need.

“Our site is well positioned for the development.  It is set back from the A350, it has excellent access to the M4, and is close enough to the town to enable local people to work close to where they live and local businesses to benefit economically.

“The economic benefits of our proposals are massive.  We will create up to 1,000 new jobs, outsource services to local businesses and inject £31 million into the Wiltshire economy per year.  The benefits will be targeted locally, and because of the training facility that we are offering people from all over the country will be using facilities like hotels, restaurants, taxis and local shops”.

“I’m aware that some local residents don’t support our plans.  Others are 100% behind us.  More than 1,150 people have petitioned in favour of the scheme and thousands have joined a Facebook page. Our supporters tell us that Chippenham desperately needs fresh investment.  We are a successful British business that will create fresh opportunities and make Chippenham a more prosperous place.”

Skate park proposals take a leap forward

Plans for a new Skate Park in Historic Royal Victoria Park are in full swing with support from prospective users. Bath & North East Somerset Council has granted the contract for re-design and build of the park to Bristol Based Canvas Spaces.

The design of the park has been largely dependent on current users such as; BMX riders, scooter riders and rollerbladers. They have attended consultation events and created a  user design panel which has allowed them to vote for their favourite designs.

The skatepark will be available for a selection of sport enthusiasts such as skateboarders, bmx riders, scooter riders and rollerbladers. A feature of the skate park will include a concrete bowl sunk into the ground. which will replicate the large ramps in the park and will benefit riders by offering a better flow of continuous ride lines.

Local councillor of Bath and North East Somerset commented :“It was clear that the skatepark needed investment - it hasn't been updated for 20 years. Its been great having this panel of riders working with us and the skatepark designers to complete the details of the design so that the park can best meet the needs of all riders.
The proposals are still in early stages and are subject to full planning permission to being granted, but already potential users are excited about the initial designs they have seen.”

Similar projects have taken place in Bath, such as the road racing circuit in Odd Down which was made possible thanks to a £600,000 grant from British Cycling. This was just one of many tracks being opened throughout Britain thanks to British Cycling. Since the opening hundreds of cyclists have made the trip to ride this circuit including some of the top level regional riders.

Many sports including cycling are becoming increasingly popular throughout the UK and with new facilities like the skate park being built in Victoria Park. Which will be one of many places that will allow children and teenagers to take part in this particular sport.

Local BMX rider Ollie Derick commented: “Its very important to have users involved; in the past, some of the obstacles have been put into a skate park with limited involvement from the users of the space, but now the alliance between the council and users has created a real confidence, in the process and a better respect for the council.”

Planning permission for the redesign will be submitted at the beginning of November if successful it is anticipated that work will be completed by the end of April 2015.

Pressures on students to attend University

As students come to the end of their studies big decisions have to be made, the final year is the time where students have to decide their future. As the year progresses post 16 students are expected to research and apply to 5 university courses which can be a tricky task. Applications have to be completed by December at the latest giving students 3 months before the summer holiday to make these life- changing decisions.

Some people can feel pressured to go to University and are worried by the rise in money costs. Leanne Atherton, graduate in Journalism said “I attended University 3 years ago, with fees at £3,000 a year. Now they have tripled, I would probably not attend university as the debt is so substantial.’

However for a lot of people, going to University is a chance to move away from your local area and explore new places and people. According to UCAS (the online application portal) application rates for 18 year olds for each UK country are at, or very near, the highest levels recorded, suggesting people are still keen to attend university.

Someone who is looking forward to attending university is 18 year old media student Matt Smith, He said: “ The life and experience of attending University interests me the most. Living on your own and meeting new people sounds exciting to me!” Within 3 months Matt has visited numerous open days in his spare time while juggling his part time job and school studies.”

However 19 year old college student Aimee Collins worries about the fees: “£9,000 a year for three years is a lot of money! Especially when you don't have a guarantee of a job afterwards. Teachers tend to push me towards University.”

The decision to attend University is becoming harder for young people who are interested in furthering their knowledge and experiences.  With many students finding other options in which they can achieve the same successes and find a good job, It is becoming harder for teenagers to decide what is best for them.
